AMERICAN HOCKEY ASSOCIATION 1926-1942

The American Hockey Association was in existence for 16 years, formed in 1926, inaugural season teams included the Duluth Hornets, Minneapolis Millers, Winnipeg Maroons, St.Paul Saints, Chicago Cardinals, and the Detroit Greyhounds. The league expanded over the years mainly locating itself in the mid-west. The league disbanded after 1943..

SOUTHERN HOCKEY LEAGUE (1973-1977)

After the Eastern Hockey League disbanded the league was split into two other leagues, the North American Hockey League and the Southern Hockey League. The Southern Hockey League included the Charlotte Checkers, Greensboro Generals, Macon Whoopees, Roanoke Valley Rebels, Suncoast Suns and the Winston- Salem Twin Polar Bears. Future expansion saw the Baltimore Clippers, Richmond Wildcats, Hampton Gulls and Tidewater Sharks join the league. Much like other pro hockey leagues of the 70s they lived a short shelf life and folded in 1977.
In 1973 the Eastern Hockey League folded after 40 years, when the league folded it split and formed two other leagues, the Southern Hockey League and the North American Hockey League. The Inaugural season officially began on Oct.12th, 1973 with a game between the Binghamton Broome Dusters and the Mohawk Valley Comets. Other teams included the Cape Cod Cubs, Johnstown Jets, Long Island Cougars, Maine Nordiques and the Syracuse Blazers. This was a pro league that served as minor affiliates for both the NHL and WHA teams. The league folded four years later.
The Western Hockey League was a minor pro ice hockey league that operated from 1952 to 1974. It was created out of the merger of the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Canada Senior Hockey League. For 22 years the WHL played in the cities of Western Canada and the US.
